Family Promise of Greater Chattanooga is hosting its sixth annual "Box City Camp Out to Stamp Out Family Homelessness" on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 5 p.m. through Sunday, Nov. 2 at 7 a.m. at our Lookouts' AT&T Field.
This year's Camp Out features our traditional entertainment including our namesake Box City Challenge, in which teams envision and create their own Box City living spaces, but also a new contest in which everyone can try their hand at designing next year's Camp Out event logo, with the winning design being used as next year's (2015) Camp Out. Of course there'll be scavenger hunt, games, music and crafts, and volunteers will be on hand to serve up sandwiches, coffee, hot chocolate, sodas, popcorn, and fruit during the Camp Out. In the morning campers will eat a light breakfast. Police security will be present during the entire event.
Youth groups, families, volunteers and other campers will learn what it’s like to be homeless by building their own cardboard box living space in Box City (or just by bringing their own camping equipment), spending the night outdoors in an “urban campground” setting and eating at a soup kitchen.
Prizes will be awarded for the best box cities built by a group or individual and for the most pledges raised by a group.
