Join us at our opening reception Saturday, November 11th from 6-8 pm as we welcome Kirby Miles' newest solo exhibition, Nectar. The show will be up until the 26th at Swine Gallery (inside Palace Picture House) and can be seen during our regular gallery hours beyond the opening reception.
Kirby's Artist Statement:
I am interested in how events, memories, traumas, and emotions congeal within my
skin; my skin as a woman, as a queer person, as a feminist, as a daughter, as every
label that I claim. I explore how every part of me functions, what limits I have mentally
and emotionally, and what connective thread I have that winds its way into the
experience of others. These mimetic aggregates are blisters that contain a
congregation of infinitesimal parts that become the fluid of our lives. This is the fluid
that we are baptized in, the fluid that seeps out and threatens to drown us if we do not
find a way to salvage the functional part of ourselves. These blisters seem to create a
reunion between sensations and the events and feelings that led up to them.
I aim to create a space of balanced trauma that is texturally rich and vibrant, a space
that is precariously close to being “too much”. This expanse seems inviting and almost
deliciously edible, but in actuality it is poison. This lacuna contains everything I
remember and everything I’ve fabricated around those memories. It is something that
seems strangely familiar to you down to the last sticky drop.
