Second Annual Mercado And Dia De Los Muertos Celebration
Chattanooga Choo Choo 1400 Market Street, City of Chattanooga, Tennessee 37402
On Sunday, October 29 from noon - 4 p.m at the Chattanooga Choo Choo on 1400 Market Street, Art 120 and The Howard School are hosting El Mercado Latinoamericano de Chattanooga.
This market is the feature of Art 120’s annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. People attending this family friendly event can expect to enjoy music, craft traditional tissue flowers and calavera masks, listen to bilingual traditional storytelling, view the fall Howard student art exhibit, and visit booths featuring the work of local Latino artists for sale and auction. Festival goers may also bring or create a memento in honor of their loved ones based on the roots of this Mexican and multi-cultural tradition.
This event is free and open to the public. Details are available on Art 120's Facebook page or on the web at www.art120.org.
El Mercado Latinoamericano de Chattanooga—typically held in the Ridgeside community--was founded by McCallie teacher Veronica Herrera and is part of a larger effort to support multicultural leadership skills through Culture Philanthropy. As Herrera explains, “In Culture Philanthropy we use culture as a catalyst to economic growth; we share culture to improve everyone's lives,” and culture will certainly be shared as vendors offer traditional food, handmade Columbian bags from Guajira region, jewelry and traditional clothing, and more.
Art 120 is a 501(c)3 organization that enriches Chattanooga and its surrounding community through the creation, education, and celebration of art through making.
