NoogaPalooza shows off Chattanooga’s musical chops

NoogaPalooza organizer Jennifer Gregory is tired of hearing that Chattanooga doesn’t have a vibrant music community. Gregory, who books musical acts for Rhythm & Brews, got together with the guys from TheNoog.com to plan a full evening of local bands and singer/songwriters on November 6.
“NoogaPalooza will be a sampling from some of the Chattanooga area’s most talented musicians, some of whom you may have never even heard of. There will be seven hours of continuous music throughout the night, with two hours of singer/songwriters in the round, seven bands, additional punctuating acts, and special events presented by TheNoog.com,” said Gregory.
The event is a benefit for the newly formed organization Re:Sound, which is in the process of becoming a nonprofit. “Re:Sound will assist local musicians, bolster the musicians’ community, and raise music awareness in Chattanooga,” Gregory explained. “Like the city’s larger arts scene, Chattanooga’s music community is rapidly growing and Re:Sound plans to provide vital professional resources to the city’s musicians.”
Gregory sent out blanket invitations to bands and musicians from all over the Chattanooga area. “We were asking them to donate their time, as the event is a benefit, and that meant some people had already booked paid gigs. But we are delighted at the response from the artists who will be there.” Some new combinations will be presented, such a Black Diamond Heavies/Uncle Lightin combo, and the Michigan émigrés I Am Band. She noted, “NoogaPalooza is an opportunity for those artists who will benefit the most from this organization to help raise the money needed to get it started.”
Artists include The Dylan Kussman Band, Taxicab Racers, Jettison Never, John Myers of Black Diamond Heavies with Doug Bales of Uncle Lightin, members of Up With The Joneses, The Hey Kids, I Am Band, Sex Head Loosey, New Binkley Brothers, Butch Ross and Amanda Cagle, Dana Rogers, Arlo Gilliam, Nathan Farrow, Tommy Davis, Noah Collins, Gabriel Zane, Ben Scoggins, Ernie Dempsey, and more. Mike McDade, well-known local sound man and “open-mic ring leader” will host the event.
In several recent Pulse articles, musicians have opined that lack of venues in Chattanooga continues to cause bands and individuals to move to bigger cities. We asked Gregory about this. “I agree to a certain extent,” she said. “That’s part of the reason we are starting Re:Sound, which is based on a very successful Athens, GA organization. It will provide rehearsal space, cross promotion, and help with marketing and publicity. Hopefully, it will encourage people to stick around.” She pointed also to CreateHere’s programs designed to help artists and entrepreneurs with the business aspects of their careers as being models for Re:Sound.
In the meantime, she said, “For just a $10 suggested donation, NoogaPalooza will be a perfect opportunity for you to check out a broad spectrum of the city’s music community while helping to establish Chattanooga as Tennessee’s ‘Other Music City’.”
Sponsors include TheNoog.com, The Pulse, Brewer Media Group, Local Strings Music Series, My Family Dinners, and CommuniTV.
