This year marks the 25th annual of “The World’s Longest Yard Sale,” which now stretches more than 690 miles from just north of Addison, Mich., all the way to Gadsden, Ala. Every year, the sale begins on the first Thursday in August (Aug. 2-5 this year), and people come from miles around to peruse the items of others that are just too good to be thrown away.

Bike Chattanooga finally out of the gate The training wheels have come off! Those stylish bikes from the Bike Chattanooga Bicycle Transit System locked up all over the city are ready to roll as of July 23. Currently, there are 300 bicycles in a network with 28 stations available for cross-town manual locomotion. Part of the delay was due to the technological advances integrated into the system that are now fully in place.

‘Light’ house parked in Chattanooga If you’ve taken a right off of  Manufacturers Road onto Cherokee Boulevard on the North Shore lately, you’ve undoubtedly noticed what is either a solar-powered space ship or an exhibition of the state’s nicest trailer.

End of an Era at Bax & Velvet's Warehouse “It’s the end of personal era,” Bax and Velvet Walker tell me, as we sit in the middle of “The Warehouse,” the Red Bank home turned theme party house. There are human-sized Alvin and the Chipmunk figurines to our right and a fully decorated and functional soda fountain in an annex to the left. There is a giant, old-school movie marquee over a stage and a functioning barbershop. Every inch of the 25-foot ceilings are covered with old Texaco signs, Coca-Cola advertisements and other decorative signage dominating the wall space. For an immediate visual context, it looks like something that Cracker Barrel’s interior decorators fantasize about. It’s a collection of Americana ranging from cowboys to Indian motorcycles and pretty much everything in between, and for the past few decades, The Warehouse collection of odds and ends off of Dayton Boulevard has served as Bax and Velvet Walker’s home.

Former CFC players give health a Nudge Apparently the Chattanooga Futbol Club is good for more than just scoring goals and dominating semi-professional soccer. Two former CFC players have developed a new mobile health app called Nudge designed to help businesses keep their costs down by keeping employees in shape.

Lions, Tigers & Leopards in Alabama Ah, exotic animal private ownership. We’ve all been there. You want to impress your friends by buying a tiger so you can re-enact your favorite scenes from “The Hangover.” But when you finally get the animal home, you realize that raw steak dinners every day are pretty expensive, and the old tiger in the bathroom gag isn’t as funny when it happens to you. Pretty soon, the magnitude of owning a 600-pound feline is weighing down every aspect of your life and you just want to be done with it.

Bike Chattanooga still on training wheels Excited about a ride (but mostly excited about not walking) across the Scenic City, I dusted my inner thighs with Gold Bond, covered them with my bicycle shorts and headed down to the rent-a-bike rack in front of Renaissance Park. Unfortunately, my Tour de Chatt was not to be; the bikes were secured as tightly as I had previously held onto my excitement.

G. Love Brings the Delta Blues The Americana troubadour Gattet Dutton, more widely known as G. Love & Special Sauce, comes to visit Track 29 on Friday June 22. Mostly known for his funked up, hip-hop blues style, his latest album features a departure from the bass heavy rhythms and lyrical cadences that characterized his early efforts. On Fixin’ To Die, his fourth record released by Brushfire Records, G. Love indulges in the folk traditions that initially inspired his wok as a musician but faded into the background on initial recordings. Meshing his ever-present harmonica with banjo and guitar picking accompanied by gritty melodies, his new genre feels like an effortlessly natural fit.

Around the Bend: Futurebirds if you can gauge a band’s merit by the company they keep, Futurebirds has already made it. Having shared the stage with such acts as Drive-By Truckers, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Widespread Panic, Futurebirds represents the Athens, Ga., tradition proudly. They have parlayed that success into a summer that has already featured dates at SXSW and the Hangout Festival and now they’re rolling onto the Bud Light Stage at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, June 8, the opening night of Riverbend.
