Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream gets an unexpected twist this February as Covenant Theatre reimagines the beloved romantic comedy in an Appalachian forest of the late 1800s, complete with live, student-composed music.
Running February 18-21, 2026, this production features a cast and creative team of more than 30 student artists. Blending magic, mischief, and mistaken identity in a setting designed to welcome Shakespeare newcomers while delighting longtime fans, ages 8 and up will enjoy this tale of four young lovers looking to escape parental authority and be with the person they love.
Director Frank Mihelich said of the production concept, “When staging Shakespeare, we always look for ways to make 400-year-old plays resonate with a contemporary audience. As a transplant to Chattanooga from California, I’ve become fascinated with Appalachian history. In learning about the
Hatfield and McCoys, I discovered a long-time feud similar to the one that shapes A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I also loved the idea of including historical music from the region, and a reference to our location on Lookout Mountain.”
