UTC Faculty Jazz Quintet
Roland Hayes Concert Hall 615 McCallie Avenue, City of Chattanooga, Tennessee 37403
The UTC Faculty Jazz Quintet will present at concert on Saturday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in the UTC Fine Arts Center. The quintet features saxophonist Clint Schmitt, guitarist Stephen Brannen, pianist David Walters, bassist Eric Hanson, and drummer Monte Coulter.
The quintet will be performing a contrasting and entertaining mix of American jazz standards. The whimsical 1930’s tune, “Louisiana Fairytale,” was first made popular by the legendary Fats Waller, but is better known to modern audiences as the theme to the long-running PBS series, “This Old House.” The quintet will present an unusual jazz waltz treatment of the Leon Russell classic, “This Masquerade,” a song made popular by guitarist and vocalist, George Benson.
The genius of the great American jazz pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk, will be displayed in the quirky, swinging tune, “Well You Needn’t.” The well-known jazz Standard, “Poinciana,” is based on the Cuban folk tune, "La canción del árbol" ("The song of the tree"). The quintet’s treatment of the song is inspired by the famous Ahmad Jamal recording. The haunting melody of the song is set overtop a hypnotic ostinato-like percussion groove. The always-infectious Latin musical gener will be represented with the romping samba, “Meglio Stasera,” written by Henry Mancini, from the first Pink Panther movie.
The concert is free and open to the public.
